FORT WORTH (June 20, 2023) – The last segment of the North Tarrant Express 35W project, connecting downtown Fort Worth and the AllianceTexas development and Denton County to the north, will officially open on Tuesday, June 20. The 6.7-mile section of I-35W, spanning from the 81/287 Decatur cutoff to Eagle Parkway in AllianceTexas, was completed three months ahead of schedule.
“The completion of North Tarrant Express 35W Segment 3C is the culmination of over a decade of progress and growth in Tarrant County,” said José Espinosa, CEO of North Tarrant Express. “The project has greatly improved the infrastructure along the major north-south interstate and has facilitated the safer, faster, and more reliable movement of people, goods, and services along one of the most vital trade corridors in the U.S.”
Construction began in 2020 and included the reconstruction of the main lanes, construction of expanded frontage roads, and the addition of two new TEXpress managed lanes in each direction. This $1-billion project, which was constructed by Ferrovial Construction and Webber at no cost to taxpayers, is part of a larger $7-billion network of managed lanes throughout North Texas that accommodate over one million vehicle trips daily.
“We had a remarkable team working on this project from day one, ensuring we finished ahead of schedule, despite a global pandemic and the resulting economic fallout and supply-chain issues,” said Angel Beltrán, CEO of North Tarrant Infrastructure. “We are proud to expand the network of reconstructed highways and new TEXpress managed lanes in North Texas with the opening of Segment 3C.”
The NTE 35W Segment 3C project is one of three reconstructed segments along the most highly congested parts of the I-35W corridor. The $1.4-billion Segment 3A project, extending from I-30 to I-820, was completed between May 2014 and July 2018. The $256-million Segment 3B project, extending from I-820 to the US 81/287 cutoff, was completed between April 2013 and November 2017.
Some of the construction statistics from the project include:
• 79 Subcontractor firms
• 23 Supplier firms
• 33 Professional Services firms
• 5,203 workers that attended Safety Orientation
• 410,000+ tons of asphalt laid
• 500+ beams placed
• 55,000+ linear feet of beams placed in total
• 38,500 cubic yards of concrete placed
• 1.3+ million cubic yards of dirt excavated
• 4.6 million worker-hours total
• 8,122 lane closures
NTE Mobility Partners Segments 3, a concession participated by Austin-based Cintra, Meridiam and APG as equity partners, financed and designed the new highway system and will operate and maintain this segment along I-35W on behalf of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Tolls collected on the TEXpress Managed Lanes are used to pay for the ongoing operation and maintenance of the entire highway system, as well as pay back the equity and bonds used to finance the project upfront.
